Week 4 was all about different assessment tools for teaching online classes. We were given a list of resources, assigned to choose 1 and complete a write up on the topic. I choose to use Survey Monkey (because of its cute name!) but here are some others options listed to choose from:

That being said, it was a positive experience, mostly because I got to read my groups write ups as well and was able to learn not just about my website, but about theirs as well. It is only Wednesday, so currently none of the groups have posted their midterms, but once they are posted, I will have access to all of them, which will act as a learning tool by familiarizing me with all of these different tools to use if/when I become an online teacher.

If you are interested, I am copy/pasting my write up below, take a look!

SURVEY MONKEY!

Introduction

I decided to focus my research on the assessment tool called SurveyMonkey. The main reason I chose this tool over the other options was simply because of its creative name. Once I typed the website into my browser I saw a video clip on the right of the screen, I clicked play and was introduced to all the great things this website provided. After I watched the informative video I decided to make an account. I could either “go pro” or sign up for free. I chose the free option, at least for now, so my research is based around the basic free program. Making an account literally took me 30 seconds. There are 3 options to sign in: google, facebook, or through email. Once I signed in, I began making my first survey. The first option is to edit the look or template of the survey and then begin creating questions. There are many different question options, such as multiple choice, ranking, text, etc. There was also a list of questions templates to choose from. Once I completed my survey I was given a web link, which I would then share with the class/audience (“How it Works,” n.d.). It was quite a simple and enjoyable experience.

.

Uses and benefits

Like I mentioned in the introduction one of the first benefits I came across was the short introduction video, which introduces the viewer instantly to all of the elements of SurveyMonkey. Besides the introduction video there are 3 main concepts of SurveyMonkey they are:

  1. Design your survey
    1. Besides personalizing the look of your survey there are also 15 different types of questions to choose from (multiple choice, short answer etc.)
  2. Collect Responses
    1. The survey can either be embedded into a blog, class website, Facebook, Twitter or emailed.
  3. Analyze Results
    1. Once the survey has been completed the surveyor can analyze at all of the results, which can be exported into many different formats, such as graphs. (“How it Works, n.d.”)

Some more benefits

  • It is free.
  • It has step-by-step instructions making it easy for those who are not familiar with the website.
  • Works great for educators and students.

Challenges of Survey Monkey

The main challenge with any online classroom tool is accessibility. If students do not always have access to the Internet, they may have difficulties meeting time requirements on surveys. Another challenge when working with this tool is technical issues. Within the few hours I spent browsing the site, I was kicked off on 2 different occasions, and once my information was not saved. Although this may not be a problem for the student, it was a problem for the surveyor.

Examples of application of the tool in an online classroom

One way to use this great resource in the classroom is to document growth in students work. By using the same survey at the beginning of the year and again at the end of the year the test will be able to show specific growth of each student. This strategy could also be use to measure growth at the beginning and end of each unit or project. (“Education, The SurveyMonkey Way,” n.d.)

Another way to use this tool in an online class would be as a strategy to get to you know your students. With a simple combination of multiple choice and short answer questions, a teacher could get a feel of the different personalities and interests of the students.

Learning Objectives:

  • The student will review the vocabulary on 1 point perspective, and receive an 80% or higher on the Surveymonkey quiz before moving on to the drawing portion of the assignment.
  • The student will use the Surveymonkey quiz results to study for the unit test on drawing.
